Tahunanui Beach is our most popular beach in Nelson. It's a great sandy beach, close to town and the playground for many land and water activities.
The front part of Tahunanui beach is great place to have a safe swim in the warm waters of Tasman Bay. The beach is mostly shallow and is lifeguarded during the main season. At the far end of the beach which is called the 'back beach', swimming is not recommended because of the currents in the Blind Channel during tides. The back beach is also the only area where dogs are allowed.
If you want to launch your Kayak, Stand-Up Paddle Board, Waka or other small non motorised water toy of choice you most do that close to Rocks Road in the designated area and you need to stay outside the area marked by black buoys for swimmers.
When the wind blows from North East to South West and you're a Kite Surfer, this might be the time to get out on the water. The designated Kite Surfing area starts close to the back beach where you will also find the Kiteschool.
Beside the beach activities the Tahunanui Reserve offers many attractions and activities to keep you and your loved ones entertained such as playgrounds, a little zoo called Natureland, a Karts track, Waterpark, a big playground with sit on modeler's train rides (weekends), Tennis courts, BBQ areas, a big sports green and a library.
The beach volleyball courts next to the beach cafe are also buzzing during the summer with local and tourists having fun.
During the summer holidays / new year additional attractions are often available on the sport greens like bouncy castles and inflatable toys and carousels.
